KUALA LUMPUR 30 Sept. - Pengerusi DAP, Karpal Singh hari ini mahu Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) tidak membenarkan pemimpin peringkat akar umbi tidak membuat kenyataan yang menjejaskan parti Pakatan seperti isu penggiliran Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang.
Karpal mendesak Penasihat PKR, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim menjelaskan keadaan sama ada Ketua Pemuda PKR Pulau Pinang, Mohd. Yusmadi Mohd.
- BERNAMA

Semua Kaum Dilayan Sama Rata

KUCHING 29 Sept.

1Malaysia gives people hope of good life

By Anthony Joseph

MIRI: 1Malaysia gives people hope and opportunities, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan yesterday.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan

“We (state government) are very happy that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is stressing that this is a very important thing for Malaysians because it gives hope to everybody,” Dr Chan said during a Hari Raya visit to the Malay community and party leaders and heads of departments in Miri yesterday.

According to Dr Chan, it is important that everyone feel that Malaysia is his home and that this is where his roots are.

“Once they have this feeling, people will contribute their best as they know that this is going to be their home and the home of their children and great grand children,” he said.

Dr Chan said he was confident that 1Malaysia would give people the opportunity to enjoy a good life.

“This hope must be given by top leadership and they must put it (1Malaysia) into practice. There is not much point shouting (about it) and then you don’t practise it. I’m sure that the prime minister will practise it,” he added.

Dr Chan also called on Malaysian professionals and intellectuals to come back and help build the nation up, saying that with great minds working together, Malaysia would be able to realise its aim of becoming a developed nation by 2020.

“If both the leaders and the people are ‘alang-alang’ (half-hearted) nothing will be achieved. If we are saying ‘Malaysia Boleh’, we must strongly feel that we ‘boleh’ (able),” said Dr Chan.

On the Raya atmosphere, Dr Chan said: “This 1Malaysia concept, I must say it has been in Sarawak for a long, long time. It’s so much alive this Raya.”

Accompanying Dr Chan were Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Peter Chin, Assistant Minister of Infra-structure Development and Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Miri mayor Lawrence Lai.

Pemecatan Chua satu taktik!

Pemecatan Chua satu taktik!

Badan keputusan tertinggi MCA, Jawatankuasa Pusat MCA (CC) membatalkan keputusan Majlis Presiden MCA (PC) memecat Dr chua Soi Lek.

- mks._

Penan tribeswomen sexually abused by loggers

Malaysia says Penan tribeswomen sexually abused by loggers

A high-level Malaysian investigation has confirmed allegations that women and young girls from the Penan tribe in Borneo have been sexually abused by workers from jungle logging camps.

A team of government officials and activists ventured into remote areas of Sarawak state in Malaysian Borneo to probe claims that the indigenous tribe was targeted with harassment and rape by timber firm employees.

In their findings, which were released on a government website, they gave detailed accounts of rape allegations from women who described extensive sexual exploitation in the isolated community.

One victim bore two children as a result of being repeatedly raped and another said that when she was just 10 years old, a logger attempted to rape her and four other girls when he gave them a ride to school in a company vehicle.

"The committee concluded the claims of sexual abuse among the Penan women and girls by outsiders that deal with the Penan, including logging company workers and businessmen, did take place," the 113-page report said.

"These sexual abuses mainly happened because the victims were relying on lifts from the logging vehicles and outsiders who deal with the villagers to buy forest products," it added.

An official from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development confirmed the release of the report and said an awareness programme was being carried out to help the Penan prevent sexual assaults.

There are at least 10,000 Penan in Sarawak, but their way of life is under threat from extensive logging of their traditional hunting grounds, as well as the spread of palm oil and timber plantations.

Hundreds of Penan tribespeople, some clad in traditional loincloths and armed with spears and blowpipes, last month set up new blockades in an escalation of their campaign against the destruction of the forest.

Penan chiefs say that after enduring decades of logging which has decimated the jungles they rely on for food and shelter, they now face the new threat of plantations which will destroy forest resources and pollute the rivers.

The rape allegations are just one of the grievances that the Penan are fighting to highlight.

Rights groups have long said that Penan youngsters who must travel from their villages in the dense rainforest to boarding schools in larger towns face constant harassment as they are forced to hitch rides with loggers.

They say that the abuse is widespread and that perpetrators, who are usually drunk, also target women living in settlements and young girls who are home during school holidays.

The investigation prompted calls from the National Human Rights Commission for the government to take action against the perpetrators, who could face up to 20 years in jail and whipping if convicted of rape.

"(The findings) would mean someone has committed an offence. They should be identified and be charged in court," the government-backed commission's vice chairman Simon Sipaun told AFP.

"How can they do this sort of thing and no action be taken against them? The Penan are not in a place to protect and defend themselves unlike women in the urban areas who have access to a lot of facilities to help them."

The Swiss-based Bruno Manser Fund (BMF), which champions indigenous rights, welcomed the release of the report but said it was "disturbing" that action has yet to be taken against the perpetrators one year after the claims emerged.

"It is high time that those responsible for the crimes described in the report will face the legal consequences of their conduct," said the group, which first raised the rape allegations.

The plight of the Penan people was made famous in the 1990s by environmental activist Bruno Manser, who campaigned to protect their way of life and fend off the loggers, before he vanished in 2000 amid suspicion of foul play.

Malaysia summons Indonesian diplomat over cultural spat

Malaysia said it had summoned Indonesia's ambassador to express "grave concern" over angry protests in the neighbouring country triggered by accusations of cultural theft.

The dispute started in Indonesia in August after erroneous reports emerged that Malaysia had screened tourism advertisements featuring the traditional "pendet" dance of Indonesia's Hindu-majority Bali island.

The ad was actually a botched promotion for a Discovery Channel programme on Malaysia but protesters vowing to "crush Malaysia" have nevertheless burned Malaysian flags and thrown rotten eggs at the country's embassy in Jakarta.

"Malaysia expresses grave concern on the actions of certain quarters in the Republic of Indonesia which are intended to spark conflicts between the peoples of Malaysia and Indonesia," the foreign ministry said late Wednesday.

It urged the Indonesian government to take steps to ensure the well-being of Malaysians there, "as well as to ensure that such aggressive actions of certain extremists in Indonesia are curtailed immediately."

It said in a statement that Foreign Minister Anifah Aman summoned Indonesia's ambassador to Malaysia Dai Bachtiar on Wednesday to express Malaysia's views on the "deterioration of the bilateral relations."

Ties between the two countries are regularly punctuated by rows, over cultural issues as well as the welfare of Indonesian labourers and maids working in Malaysia.
