OK, let’s review Kidurong

OK, let’s review Kidurong
By Churchill Edward and Saibi Gi

Mawan, Masing say time to allocate constituency to another BN party since seat lost twice consecutively

KUCHING: Senior Barisan Nasional (BN) Dayak leaders believe that if there is to be any re-distribution of seats among the coalition parties, the Kidurong state constituency should be prioritised.

Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom and Parti Rakyat Sarawak president Dato Sri Dr James Masing said they felt that this was apt, saying since the BN had lost twice consecutively in Kidurong, it may be timely that another BN component be given a chance to contest there in the next state polls.

Mawan and Masing were responding to a suggestion by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin that BN should review allocation of seats among component parties to suit the needs of the electorate.

Mawan suggested a review of Kidurong when he said: “BN has lost the seat to DAP twice consecutively (in the state polls of 2001 and 2006) whereas every time (SPDP treasurer-general) Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing contested in the (Bintulu) parliamentary seat (which includes Kidurong state constituency), the BN won,” he said.

Masing who also felt the Kidurong state seat should be subjected to review, said: “BN will have to discuss how best not to lose that seat again.”

Mawan and Masing both revealed that the BN had an understanding that if a component party had lost twice consecutively in a particular constituency - be it parliamentary or state – the seat would be subjected to a review.

According to the two leaders, seat arrangement is not only a strategy but a serious matter to ensure a BN victory at all cost in the next state election, due latest by early 2011.

Kidurong has been allocated to Sarawak United People’s Party headed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan.

SUPP had lost the state seat twice to DAP’s Chiew Chiu Sing.

Apart from Kidurong, BN also lost in the Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat to the DAP twice consecutively - in 2004 and 2008 parliamentary elections.

The BN allocated this seat to SUPP twice but they lost it to state DAP secretary Chong Chieng Jen.

Mawan, also Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation, said he supported Khaled’s suggestion.

“To me, it has always been the understanding among BN components that the allocation of seats be reviewed from time to time or when the need arises. As a matter of principle the BN should also talk about it,” he said.

“That need arises if, for instance, BN loses a particular seat twice consecutively,” he added.

Mawan said when one talked about seat redistribution, the overall interest of the BN must come first rather than that of individual component parties.

“The minister’s (Khaled) suggestion is something we should be looking into because it is very practical. As far as he and the BN in West Malaysia are concerned, he has hit the nail on the head.

“If BN loses again in any particular seat, we can say that BN as a whole is losing. So it is imperative for the BN to gain public confidence and return to its winning ways,” he said.

“Any individual component should not be self-centred. What is the point of being self-centred when one drags BN to lose seats? This will slowly weaken the BN and erode the spirit of teamwork,” he said.

“If a review is made, component parties must not interpret this as a ‘plus or minus’ thing but rather a strategy to win seats or win back seats it has lost,” he said.

According to him, if BN wins big the next time around, interest of every component party will be better taken care of.

On the Sarawak front, Mawan said he would let the BN leadership decide on seat allocation because this, according to him, is a major strategy rather than plan to boost the self -esteem of any individual party.

He said boosting self-esteem was something that could not be entertained in this current political time.

Masing who is the Land Development Minister, said Khaled was basically referring to the state of the BN in Peninsular Malaysia when he suggested his idea.

Nonetheless, he said even though the BN seat arrangement in Sarawak seemed to be working better than that in the Peninsula, the state BN must study the impact of such review carefully.

“The minister’s (Khaled) suggestion is something worthwhile looking into because of demographic changes which can occur in any seat over a period of time. This has been the understanding of the state BN,” he said.

According to Masing, there are things which the BN must tackle urgently to win back lost seats, including the swapping of seats among components.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice president Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said the state BN would only review seat arrangement if the grassroots demanded it.

However, the state BN may not want to disrupt the equilibrium of power by subtracting or adding seats of component members.

According to Daud, the state BN may want to maintain the status quo when it comes to the numbers’ game.

“PBB may be the backbone of BN in Sarawak but PBB will never resort to taking away seats already allocated to other components,” he insisted.

“What may happen is the swapping of seats by taking into account what the grassroots want,” he said.

He said he believed the allocation of seats depended heavily on the strength of parties in areas they represented.

“We must go back to the reality that BN’s victories in elections depend very much on the votes of the majority and that BN subscribes to the concept of power-sharing,” he said, urging component parties to be mindful of the political sensitivities surrounding the issue.

“BN elected representatives serve all races and communities regardless which component they come from,” he said.

PBB Youth chief Fadillah Yusof, meanwhile, said BN elected representatives must have quality and integrity as well as the sincerity to serve the people.

He said he agreed with Khaled’s suggestion to study the demography of each area when BN should decide to review seat allocation.

Women eat less when on a date

Women eat less when they were out on a date in order to be seen more "attractive", while the sex of the dining companion didn't influence the caloric intake of men, a study has suggested.

According to the findings of a Canadian study, women eat much less around men than they do around other women, and alone. In effect, men acted as "negative predictors" of behaviour, meaning that the more men a woman was eating with, the less she ate.

"When it is a date situation, that's when we see a big difference," said Meredith Young, of the Centre for Medical Education at McGill University in Montreal.

"You can be judged more or less attractive, more or less feminine, more or less desirable depending on what you eat," argued Young, the lead researcher of the study, published in the online food journal Appetite.

For men, it was a different story. Neither the number of dining companions nor the group's gender makeup seemed to make a difference in how much men ate.

Based on the study of 460 students at McMaster University, Young found women dining with one other woman ate an average of 670 calories worth of food during their meal, and women eating with up to three other women ate 750 calories.

Eating with a man had women consuming an average of just 540 calories, and eating with a group of men drew the lowest result, with the average consumption at 450 calories for the women involved.

Women who eat in smaller groups of female friends, the Canadian study found, eat somewhat less, and those who eat a meal with a man eat even less.

"When more and more women get together, the caloric count seems to increase. But men, nothing really affected them at all," Young stressed.

Speculating on why dining companions of the opposite sex influence women's eating behavour, Young said it could be due to "social signaling thing". In effect, women want to look "more attractive", especially if a potential date or mate is sitting at the table.

Estimated Losses Of RM100-200 Million

Due To Illegal Demo: Raja Nong Chik

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 Ogos (Bernama) -- The Federal Territory Ministry Sunday estimated that losses incurred by businesse as well as the damage to property as a result of the illegal demonstration yesterday were between RM100-200 million.

Minister Senator Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said however his staff will go to the locations tomorrow to assess the losses and damage.

"We will try to get all estimates of losses and damages and it will be in the millions. At least, my estimate is between RM100-200 million," he told reporters after officiating the 1Malaysia carnival themed 'Realising the Country's Vision' organised by the the Desa Tasik Residents Association here Sunday.

He said the estimate would also take into consideration that yesterday was a weekend day and people were out shopping and it was close to Hari Raya which will be celebrated by Muslims next month.

Raja Nong Chik said he would also go to the locations to see for himself the situation there.

Yesterday, the Abolish the Internal Security Act (ISA) Movement's estimated 10,000 supporters had a street demonstration to protest against the ISA at several popular locations like Masjid Jamek, Dataran Merdeka, the National Mosque amd along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman including outside the Sogo shopping complex.

Commenting on the group's action that caused massive congestion in the city, Raja Nong Chik said they were "prodded" by certain quarters to do so.

"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had already said that the ISA would be reviewed. They should give the government the chance to review...give views.

"They can give views on the PM's blog, even e-mail. If we say we won't review, then they can protest, but we want to review so they should not protest. I feel this matter has been politicised. That's all. This gives a bad image of the country to the outside world," he said.

Pembalakan jejaskan sumber makanan

Pembalakan jejaskan sumber makanan

Kerajaan menurut beliau kini sedang berusaha menghulurkan bantuan makanan.

Ia satu kejutan.

1Malaysia Concept Strategically Important For Nation, says PM

MUAR, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the 1Malaysia concept needed to be seen as strategically important for the nation especially in expanding relations with new world economic centres like China and India.

According to the Prime Minister, the 1Malaysia concept could be looked at from various dimensions, among them national unity and the nation's strategic interests.

"Through the 1Malaysia concpet, foreign countries can see Malaysia as one which is multi-ethnic. They can identify with Malaysia's pluarity through 1Malaysia," he told a press conference at Kompleks Seri Pekembar, Pagoh here Sunday.

Najib, who is also Umno president, said this after opening Pagoh Umno's annual delgates meeting which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Muhyiddin is also the division's chief.

Najib said besides China and India and countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia would also emerge as new economic powers in the world in the short and medium term.

He said although the world was facing an economic crisis now, China was able to record a high growth rate of 7.6 per cent and that the same was happening in India.

Middle East countries, he said, had excess capital now which could be invested in Malaysia while Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia were of very high economic importance to the country.

The Prime Minister said, because of the global economic meltdown, the United States (US) could no longer be able to be a big consumer market like before and the situation was compounded by problems in its financial systems.

"Though this is the case, we must still continue economic relations with the US and Europe, but we should not be over reliant on them," he said.

Najib also said tomorrow he would be announcing the names of those appointed to the board of EKUINAS (Ekuiti Nasional), an investment body set up by the government to help bumiputeras expand equity ownership.
