Parent unhappy with forced haircut before PMR examination

KOTA KINABALU: A concerned parent has called on the management of SMK Majakir, Papar to explain the action taken by them to force students to have a military style hair cut, yesterday.

The complainant said the school management had forced students, who would be sitting for the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination beginning today, to do the military hair cut in front of other students.

“Is there any directive from the Education Department to force the PMR candidates to cut their hair short or bald before sitting for the PMR? If there was no such directive, then why take this kind of action without thinking of the students’ emotion?

“These students would sit for the PMR examination tomorrow (today) and action taken by the school would definitely affect the students’ emotion,” the complainant said.

He questioned whether it was the right time for the school to take action on disciplinary issues on those who would be sitting for the PMR examination.

“Teachers in this school should be professional in handling the disciplinary problems among their students and not to do that when the students are about to take their PMR examination.

“The education department should not allow this thing to happen because it will affect the emotions of the students,” he said.

The complainant added that because of embarrassment and anger caused by the action of the school management, some students, including his son, are reluctant to come and sit for examination, today.

“The school management should give a better explanation as their action involved the self-respect of the students,” he added.
