BINTULU: Only those who are truly sincere and capable can bring greater changes and benefits to the rakyat, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said Sunday night.
He said it was not enough just to have power.
“With power come great responsibility,” he said, adding that politics was not just about debating policies.
“The implementation of projects and programmes for greater development also counts,” he said.
He said politicians should not look at how much power they had after an election, but look at how they could use that power to sort things out for the rakyat’s betterment.
“If one has the power, but does not know how to use, wisely, it’s going to be a waste, and it will badly affect the people who have given their trust and confidence with the hope for a better future,” he said when speaking at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House at Medan Niaga SEDC Jepak here.
He said the next state election would be a determinant for the people in Sarawak whether they wanted continued prosperity or just wanted to “play new politics” and end up chaotic as in some countries.
“There is no such thing as guaranteed peace or prosperity unless we work for it.
“No matter how successful or prosperous we are, if we can’t maintain our stability, our prosperity will erode,” he said.
He said the people should be thankful that under the Barisan Nasional (BN) government they had witnessed greater transformation and development.
