“We (state government) are very happy that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is stressing that this is a very important thing for Malaysians because it gives hope to everybody,” Dr Chan said during a Hari Raya visit to the Malay community and party leaders and heads of departments in Miri yesterday.

According to Dr Chan, it is important that everyone feel that Malaysia is his home and that this is where his roots are.

“Once they have this feeling, people will contribute their best as they know that this is going to be their home and the home of their children and great grand children,” he said.

Dr Chan said he was confident that 1Malaysia would give people the opportunity to enjoy a good life.

“This hope must be given by top leadership and they must put it (1Malaysia) into practice. There is not much point shouting (about it) and then you don’t practise it. I’m sure that the prime minister will practise it,” he added.

Dr Chan also called on Malaysian professionals and intellectuals to come back and help build the nation up, saying that with great minds working together, Malaysia would be able to realise its aim of becoming a developed nation by 2020.

“If both the leaders and the people are ‘alang-alang’ (half-hearted) nothing will be achieved. If we are saying ‘Malaysia Boleh’, we must strongly feel that we ‘boleh’ (able),” said Dr Chan.

On the Raya atmosphere, Dr Chan said: “This 1Malaysia concept, I must say it has been in Sarawak for a long, long time. It’s so much alive this Raya.”

Accompanying Dr Chan were Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Peter Chin, Assistant Minister of Infra-structure Development and Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Miri mayor Lawrence Lai.
